# Gel Nails, Ranked by Evidence: The Lamp Isn't the Real Risk

> Gel, builder gel (BIAB), dip powder, press-ons and plain polish, ranked by what the studies show. The nail-lamp cancer headlines, the EU TPO ban, "LED" lamps and the allergy dermatologists see most.

One TikTok with more than 760,000 views opens with a warning not to do gel nails at home. Another creator says the lamp darkened her hands. Builder gel is sold with the promise that your own nails will grow. And in September 2025 the European Union banned an ingredient found in a lot of gel polish. So we read the studies, the regulators and the fine print, and ranked nine ways to do your nails.

## The board

| Tier | Option | Typical price (30 Oct 2026) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| **S** | Plain nail polish | about $10 | No lamp, no liquid acrylate curing on skin. Chips in days. |
| **S** | Gel-effect polish (Essie Gel Couture, Sally Hansen Miracle Gel, OPI Infinite Shine) | $12.99–$14.49 | The gel look with no lamp. Wear claims run ahead of some reviews. |
| **A** | Press-on nails | about $9–$16 a set | No lamp. Damage comes mostly from forcing them off. |
| **B** | Salon gel polish | about $40–$80 (US) | Fine with a trained technician, sunscreen and gentle removal. |
| **B** | "HEMA-free" gel | varies | Still acrylates. The label alone doesn't remove the allergy risk. |
| **B** | Builder gel / BIAB | £35–£60 (UK salon) | A thicker gel. A manicure, not a treatment. |
| **C** | DIY gel kits | about $36–$60 | Where most of the allergy evidence sits. |
| **C** | Dip powder | about $40–$60 (salon) | No lamp, but still acrylate chemistry and harsh removal. |
| **D** | Cheap MMA acrylics | — | Prohibited in California salons; can tear the nail. |

## Three surprises

**1. The lamp is not the biggest risk.** A 2023 UC San Diego study found one 20-minute session under a nail dryer killed 20–30% of skin cells in a dish, and three sessions up to 70%. But these were cells with no outer skin layer, far longer than a real cure, and the authors say it is not direct evidence of cancer in people. A follow-up at a realistic four minutes found no significant drop in cell survival. A 2025 review of 14 papers found a lack of compelling evidence that the lamps cause skin cancer, and a Spanish team put one session at roughly 3.5 to 6 minutes of midday summer sun. Low risk, not proven zero. Dermatologists suggest SPF 30+ on your hands or dark fingerless gloves.

**2. An LED lamp is still a UV lamp.** Most gel cures with ultraviolet A light, often with some violet light too. In a small 2026 study of 21 dryers, UV-LED models gave out no less UV inside than UV-only models, and leaked more. The American Academy of Dermatology still recommends LED because it cures faster with less total UV. Less UV, not no UV.

**3. "HEMA-free" is not allergy-free.** Allergy to acrylates, mostly from uncured gel touching skin, is the best-documented harm. In a large US and Canada patch-test study, more than half of nail-allergy patients tested for HEMA reacted to it. But a survey of 394 products found related acrylates everywhere, a Finnish lab found labels that didn't fully match what was inside, and dermatologists have reported allergy to a vegan "HEMA-free" gel.

## About the TPO ban

TPO is a light-reacting ingredient in many gels. The EU banned it from 1 September 2025 with no sell-through, as a presumed reproductive toxicant (a possible risk to fertility) based largely on animal studies. That is a precautionary call, not a verdict on your past manicures. Great Britain stopped new TPO products in August 2026 and shelves must clear by February 2027. It is not banned in the US.

## Five rules if you love gel

1. A trained technician, or the lamp made for your gel.
2. Keep gel off your skin.
3. SPF or fingerless gloves under the lamp.
4. Soak it off. Never peel.
5. Itching or swelling? Stop, and ask for a patch test. Tell your dentist or surgeon if you're allergic.
