"Rhode's $25 Bronzer vs the $7 Alternative"

9 October 2026

Rhode's Pocket Bronze costs $25 for 5.3 g of product. The e.l.f. stick that one makeup artist put head to head with it costs $7. Gram for gram, rhode costs more than six times as much [1, 9]. But cheaper does not automatically mean better. So we read what rhode promises, what reviewers actually found, and what you get for your money across four cream bronzer sticks.

What we checked

Product Price Net weight Per gram Where, when
rhode Pocket Bronze $25 5.3 g $4.72 rhodeskin.com, 9 October 2026
e.l.f. Soft Glam Cream Bronzer Stick $7 9.4 g* $0.74 elfcosmetics.com, 9 October 2026
Rare Beauty Warm Wishes Effortless Bronzer Stick $30 7 g $4.29 rarebeauty.com, 9 October 2026
Dior Forever Skin Bronze $52 8 g $6.50 dior.com, 9 October 2026

*e.l.f.'s US page lists no weight. Retailers list 9.4 g, 9.5 g and 0.39 oz (about 11 g) [9]. We used the smallest, which is the kindest to rhode. At 11 g, e.l.f. works out at $0.64 a gram.

Price per gram does not measure performance or how much you use each time. It tells you what you pay for the product in the stick.

The hype

Pocket Bronze is the first bronzer from rhode, Hailey Bieber's brand. It launched on 9 June 2026 at 9am Pacific time, in eight shades [2]. A fan account that tracks rhode drops posted that Sunbed and the matching brush sold out on launch day, and that Pebble and Sip followed four days later. The summer kit sold out [3]. ITV's This Morning went further and called it the fastest-selling bronzer at Sephora this year [4]. That is their claim. We could not find sales data that confirms it.

One thing worth knowing: almost every creator in our video says on camera that rhode sent them the shades. Katie Jane Hughes, MannyMUA, Whitney Madueke and Toni Bravo all say so, and Toni Bravo also says she has consulted for the brand.

What the label said

rhode says Pocket Bronze melts into skin, gives a natural, seamless finish, feels hydrating and lasts at least eight hours [1]. Those claims come from two tests rhode ran itself. In the first, 34 people gave their impressions straight after putting it on. In the second, a clinical test of 34 people, rhode says it lasted eight hours. Both are brand-run and small, so we treat them as promises, not proof.

The US formula is fragrance-free, with two peptides (palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and -5) and tamanu oil [1, 5]. Nice to have, but in a bronzer they are not why you buy it.

What reviewers found

Finish. The Independent's IndyBest reviewer gave it 4.5 out of 5 and called it streak-free [6]. Katie Jane Hughes, a makeup artist who has done Hailey Bieber's own makeup, called it "a very makeup artist worthy product". She was gifted three shades.

Strength. Reviewers do not agree. MannyMUA called the shades "extremely pigmented". The Independent's reviewer said it was so sheer she could see her skin right through it [6].

Application. The Independent got a fuller result with fingers, because the brush seemed to soak up product [6]. MannyMUA wished the brush were denser. Mykie (Glamzilla) said the formula is good but called the packaging "too cheap" for the price.

Wear. The Independent found it lasted from day into night [6]. Mamamia's beauty editor said that, without setting it, hers did not last as long as advertised [7].

Shade. Essence picked it as a standout for deeper skin, noting that three of the eight shades were developed with deeper complexions in mind [8]. Creator Whitney Madueke, gifted the three darkest shades, called it her new favourite bronzer. Mamamia's editor found the lightest shade, Pebble, too warm, and said it made her skin look muddy [7].

One formula, very different results, depending on your skin.

The alternatives

e.l.f. Soft Glam Cream Bronzer Stick ($7). It advertises eight shades, has shea butter and sunflower oil, and averages 4.6 out of 5 from 237 reviews on e.l.f.'s own site [9]. One makeup artist who put the two head to head called rhode "undeniably beautiful and effective", but said e.l.f. wins for her on value [10]. That is one artist's view, not a lab test, but dupe round-ups say the same [11]. What you give up: the packaging, the matching brush, and an identical formula. For $25 you could buy three e.l.f. sticks and have $4 left.

Rare Beauty Warm Wishes ($30). Not a budget alternative but another premium option. It costs $5 more than rhode, holds more product, and works out slightly cheaper per gram. It averages 4.8 out of 5 from over 2,000 reviews on Rare Beauty's own site [12].

Dior Forever Skin Bronze ($52). Marie Claire ranks it its top bronzer stick, and it averages 4.7 out of 5 from over 600 reviews on Ulta [13, 14]. It has six shades and the highest price per gram here. Unlike rhode's US formula, it contains added fragrance (parfum and vanillin on the ingredient list) [13].

The verdict

It depends on what you need. If you want the most product for your money, buy e.l.f.: nothing here comes close on value, and it is a sensible first cream bronzer. If you have deeper skin and want a fragrance-free formula, rhode is worth a look; reviewers rate its deeper shades highly, and that range is a big part of what you are paying for. If you want more product than rhode at a similar price, Rare Beauty is a solid premium choice. Dior only makes sense if you want the luxury experience and do not mind added fragrance.

For value, e.l.f.; for deeper skin and no fragrance, rhode.
