Ranking TikTok's Most Viral Makeup, Unsponsored: I Read Every Label
This week, TikTok users searched for "products actually worth buying" 9.5 million times. So we took four of the most viral makeup products on the app and checked each one the same way: the price and the promise, what buyers say, then what the label and the evidence actually show. One hides its best marketing line in the last ingredient on the list. One proves its skincare claim on twenty people. And one costs nearly four times more per millilitre than the product everyone calls its dupe.
Shop the ones that earned a BUY (affiliate links, Amazon US): 1. Clinique Black Honey · 2. Maybelline Sky High · 3. Kosas Revealer. UK, Canada, Germany, France and Italy links are in Where to buy.
What we checked
| Product | Brand-site price | What it promises |
|---|---|---|
| Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High (washable) | $13.99 | Length, volume, and bamboo extract for "stronger, healthier lashes" |
| Kosas Revealer Concealer (38 shades, about 6 ml) | $32 | A concealer that improves skin, backed by a 20-person study |
| Clinique Almost Lipstick, Black Honey | $25 | One sheer berry that flatters every skin tone |
| Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter (12 shades, 30 ml) | $50 | Blurs, smooths and glows; "clinically proven results" |
Prices were checked on each brand's own site on 16 October 2026.
What the label said
Maybelline Sky High. Buyers agree it works: in one head-to-head test, one coat looked natural, a second added real length, and a third got close to the TikTok look, with clumping growing coat by coat. That tester ranked it 15th of the 31 mascaras she had tried [2]. The label is the interesting part. The bamboo extract Maybelline says makes lashes stronger is the very last of 37 ingredients, listed after the preservatives [1]. Being last doesn't prove it does nothing, but it isn't what makes this mascara work. What does is ordinary: film-forming polymers, waxes, and rayon, a fine fibre that adds length. One more detail: the same Maybelline page claims "100,000+" five-star ratings in its text and "over 500,000" in a banner, and its small print says the count includes every Sky High shade, retailers worldwide, and incentivised reviews. Kosas Revealer. As a concealer, people really like it: 4.5 stars from 2,260 reviews on Kosas's own site, and in an independent test of ten women most found it creamy, buildable and long-lasting [3][4]. The honest notes: a couple needed powder to stop shine, one saw creasing until she re-blended, one found it darkened slightly as it dried, and reviewers warn the shades can run warm [4][5]. The skincare claim is where it gets thin. Kosas reports that 100% of people saw improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, but that was twenty people over 28 days, run and reported by the brand, with no comparison group [3]. And the caffeine, peptide and hyaluronic acid sit at positions 19 to 21 of 36 on the ingredient list, after the waxes and the base. See Kosas Revealer on Amazon →
Clinique Black Honey. Around since the 1970s, and famous all over again on TikTok, where its hashtags have passed 200 million views [6][7]. There is no colour-changing chemistry on the label: it is a castor oil and wax balm with a small amount of pigment [8]. Because it is sheer, your own lip colour shows through, so it looks a little different on everyone. That's not a trick; it's good design. Buyers love it for exactly that, across thousands of reviews. The one complaint: it wears off fast. See Black Honey on Amazon →
Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter. Charlotte Tilbury says it blurs, smooths and glows, and calls it the number one prestige highlighter in the US by sales [9]. Its "clinically-proven results" section is worth opening: the 24-hour moisture claim was tested on 16 people, and the 96%, 100% and 99% figures are people who agreed with statements like "skin looks glowing" after one week, in a group of 300 [9]. That is a survey of how people felt, not a measurement.
The dupe question
The product everyone compares it to is e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter: $14 for 31.5 ml [10]. Charlotte Tilbury works out at about $1.67 per millilitre; e.l.f. at about $0.44. That is close to four times the price for the same job. In one side-by-side test, the Charlotte Tilbury blended more smoothly, looked less pearly and came in more shades, especially for fair skin; the e.l.f. was stickier and showed more texture [11].
| Price | Size | Per ml | Shades | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter | $50 | 30 ml | $1.67 | 12 |
| e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter | $14 | 31.5 ml | $0.44 | 8 |
The verdict
Black Honey: BUY, for being honest about what it is: one easy tint that works with almost anything. If $25 feels like a lot, creators keep pointing to CoverGirl's Clean Fresh Tinted Lip Balm, around $5, as a lookalike [7].
Sky High: BUY, for real length at a drugstore price. Buy it for the wand and the fibres, not the bamboo.
Kosas Revealer: BUY, as a concealer. Swatch the shade first, and don't pay $32 for the skincare.
Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter: WAIT. Try the $14 version first. If it shows your texture or you can't find your shade, the Charlotte Tilbury is the nicer formula. But nicer isn't four times nicer for most people.
The pattern across all four: the product is usually fine. It's the marketing line that needs checking.
Worth knowing
- "Clinically proven" can mean a small test run by the brand itself. Look for how many people, for how long, and whether there was a comparison group.
- Ingredients are listed from most to least. An "active" near the end of the list is there in small amounts.
- Rating counts on brand sites can add up every shade and every retailer. Check the small print.
- A cheaper "dupe" is worth trying first when the job is the same. Pay more only for something you can actually see.
